Shear Academy Courses Offered

This is the Tennessee State Barber Board's definition of a Barber.

A barber performs one or any combination of practices listed for payment, directly or indirectly, or without payment for the public generally: shaving or trimming beards, cutting, or styling the hair, giving facial and scalp massages or treatments with oils, creams, lotions or other preparations either by hand or mechanical appliances; singeing, curling, shampooing, coloring, bleaching or straightening the hair, or applying hair tonics; cutting fitting, measuring and forming head caps for wigs or hair pieces; hair weaving (excluding medical or surgical procedures); applying cosmetic preparations, antiseptics, powders, oils, clays or lotions to scalp, face, neck or other parts of the body; or manicuring and nail care.

Shear Academy offers the following:

Master Barber

Master barber is a basic course consisting of a minimum of 1500 clock hours of training as required by the Tennessee Board of Barber Examiners. A student who completes this course and successfully passes a state board examination will be prepared for an entry-level position in a barber or beauty salon

Classroom Theory: History and fundamentals of barbering Elementary chemistry relating to sterilization, sanitation, bacteriology, hygiene Barber implements Shaving Skin, scalp, and hair Haircutting, hairstyling, and hairsetting Hairpieces – sales and service Chemical theory (permanent waving, hair coloring, bleaching and straightening) Manicure and nail care Anatomy, physiology and systems structure of the head, face and neck, Makeup and skin care Theory of massage and facial treatment Disorders of the skin, scalp and hair Barber law, rules and regulations Business management and salesmanship Preparation for seeking employment - Required Total Hours: 240

Chemical Study: Permanent waving Hair relaxing Hair coloring, decolorizing and toning Manicures - Required Total Hours: 360

Physical Study: Shampooing and rinses Hair care and scalp care Haircutting (male and female) Shaving (beards and mustaches) Hairpiece-fitting Hairstyling Facials and makeup Manicures - Required Total Hours: 900

TOTAL CURRICULUM HOURS: 1500

  

Barber Instructor

Barber instructor is an advanced program consisting of 450 clock hours beyond the master barber course as required by the Tennessee Board of Barber Examiners. A student who completes this course and successfully passes a state board examination will be qualified to teach in a licensed barber-styling school in the state of Tennessee

Physical Study: Permanent Waving Relaxers Shampooing Nail Care Facials Hair coloring/lightening Haircutting Clinic Floor Management - Required Total Hours: 200
